Requirements for obtaining a California driver’s license

Under 18 years

  1. Obtain parental permission
  2. Complete Driver’s Education 
  3. Pass written test at the DMV – must be at least 15 1/2 yrs. old
  4. Schedule and complete 6-hours of Driver’s Training with a Professional Driving School
  5. Permit not valid until teen completes the first driving lesson
  6. Log 50 hours of supervised driving with a person who is at least 25 years old and holds a valid CDL
  7. Pass the Road Test at DMV– must be at least 16 yrs. old and held permit for at least 6 months
  8. Provide proof of completion of Driver’s Ed & Training

18 years & older

  1. Submit a drivers license application online at dmv.ca.gov
  2. Pay the licensing fee
  3. Pass written test and vision test at DMV
  4. Pass the DMV drive test, appointment required
