Requirements for obtaining a California driver’s license
Under 18 years
- Obtain parental permission
- Complete Driver’s Education
- Pass written test at the DMV – must be at least 15 1/2 yrs. old
- Schedule and complete 6-hours of Driver’s Training with a Professional Driving School
- Permit not valid until teen completes the first driving lesson
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving with a person who is at least 25 years old and holds a valid CDL
- Pass the Road Test at DMV– must be at least 16 yrs. old and held permit for at least 6 months
- Provide proof of completion of Driver’s Ed & Training
18 years & older
- Submit a drivers license application online at dmv.ca.gov
- Pay the licensing fee
- Pass written test and vision test at DMV
- Pass the DMV drive test, appointment required
