Oakland Driving Lessons

We love Oakland!  The former owners of Bay Area Driving School are Oakland residents and attended Fremont High School in Oakland! We offer top quality, in-car driving instruction for teens & adults.  We also do remedial lessons and assessments for seniors.    

We can pick you up at your home, school or work. Our instructors are experts in the traffic patterns and challenges specific to Oakland and Alameda County.

Typical driving lessons in Oakland

Typical lessons in Oakland include practice near your residence and near most of the Oakland High Schools.  We often practice near Park Avenue, Glenview, Piedmont, Laurel District.   When students build more confidence and skill, we will train on busier streets and more complex driving environments like Broadway, Telegraph and other roadways in downtown Oakland, International Blvd., Hegenberger, etc..  We often practice in bordering cities like Alameda, San Leandro and Berkeley.    

Hills

You may also get experience in the beautiful hills of Oakland, Golf Links, Skyline, Broadway Terrace, Mountain Blvd., etc.  

Freeways

When ready, drivers will practice on I-24, I-580, Highway 13, I-980,

Meet at our office in Hayward OR request a pick up and drop off at home in Oakland for an additional travel fee.  Many parents from Oakland prefer a school pick up and drop off at home.  We can pick up at any high school in Oakland including:

DMV Information for Dublin Residents

Oakland Coliseum DMV:  Located at 501 85th Ave. Oakland, CA 94621

Oakland Claremont DMV:  Located at 5300 Claremont. Oakland, CA 94618

Here’s some handy information specific to the DMV’s in Oakland: 

• Use extra caution when exiting the DMV parking lot
• Watch out for pedestrians & bicyclists
• Beware of “No turn on red” signs
• Unprotected left turn must be made safely.  Yield to anyone close enough to be dangerous. Applicants will do at least 1 unprotected left turn
• Reduce speed when going over railroad tracks
• Use extra care when going through blind intersections
• Reduce speed with dips in the road
• When making a left turn with a center turn lane, must signal, check mirrors and look over shoulder prior to entering the center turn lane  
• When making a right turn – be sure to end in the right lane
• Look over shoulder before crossing the bicycle lane

I had an excellent experience at the "Bay Area Driving School" (Traffic School). Before I even took the course (on-line), I had called them several times and they were so kind and helpful with all my questions. After taking the course, I truly feel like I am a more conscientious driver. I am 71 years old and the last time I studied the driving laws to this extent, I was 17 years old. It's been a "win-win" experience. No one ever wants to get a ticket but if you happen to unfortunately do so… please go to Bay Area Traffic School! I had the pleasure of being supported by the wonderful Erica with each step! Very cool instructor (John) and very helpful and clam when driving. Being picked up from my house and driving around Oakland made me more comfortable with being on the road and more comfortable around other cars.
