Requirements for obtaining driver’s license – under 18 years

  1. Obtain parental permission
  2. Complete driver’s education – either in-class or online
  3. Pass written test at the DMV – must be at least 15 1/2 yrs. old
  4. Schedule  and complete 6-hours of Driver’s Training with a Professional Driving School.
  5. Permit not valid until teen completes the first driving lesson
  6. Log 50 hours of supervised driving with a person who is at least 25 years old and holds a valid CDL
  7. Pass the Road Test at DMV – must be at least 16 yrs. old and held permit for at least 6 months

DMV Appointments

No appointment is needed for written tests. However, you must schedule an appointment for all road tests. For more information, DMV.ca.gov

What to bring to DMV

Written test: Bring birth verification, driver’s education certificate with a parent’s signature, the licensing fee, two proof of residency documents, and the DMV application confirmation number -complete the application online. If needed for the vision test, bring glasses or contacts. Additional documents are required for a Real ID.

Road test: Bring learner’s permit with a driving instructor’s AND parent’s signature on page 2, driver’s education certificate, driver’s training certificate, vehicle registration & insurance, and glasses or contacts if needed. For more details, visit  DMV.ca.gov
