DMV eLearning Course – What You Need to Know / License Renewal

What is eLearning?
eLearning is an interactive, no-fail course offered by the California DMV. It allows eligible drivers to renew their license without taking the traditional written knowledge test. If you are age 70+ and renewing your driver’s license, you might not need to take a test. Check your renewal notice to be sure (source DMV). Drivers whose notice says knowledge test required may opt for eLearning – in lieu of the written test. eLearning is an free online class that you take at home.
That’s right! If you have to renew your license you may opt for eLearning and skip the written test. This is an ideal option for people who have trouble with exams or prefer an alternative learning method. eLearning is only available to those who have not yet processed an application at a DMV office.

Who is eligible
- Only eligible renewal noncommercial Class C driver’s license (federal noncompliant and REAL ID) applicants qualify for eLearning.

How do I choose the eLearning option
- If you received your DMV renewal notice by mail – go to DMV.ca.gov/renewnow
- If you received a Paperless renewal notice – click the link in your email to start process
- Go through the prompts and complete payment for renewal
- Select eLearning – “I want to take my test through eLearning course”
- If eligible, you will receive an email with link to access the course

- OK to complete over multiple sittings
- Complete course on personal computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with internet access
- When you finish the last lesson, eLearning will notify you that you completed the course

If you’re not eligible for eLearning and must take the written test, Bay Area Driving School offers courses to help you prepare. It’s important to study and refresh your knowledge of the current rules of the road. Review the DMV handbook, as all test questions will be based on its content. Preparing for the DMV written test
We recognize that a DMV test can be a source of significant anxiety. Rest assured, we are for your support. We offer three options to help individuals prepare for the knowledge test.
- Practice Test Questions – Course for Seniors – access to practice test questions. Fee $17.95
- One-on-One Tutorial – in-person classes often provide a more effective learning experience. Receive paper copy of questions. In-person or via Zoom. Fee $235
- Online Driver’s Education – for those who prefer to read the full DMV driver’s ed curriculum. Fee $45.99
DMV written test
The most common test method for the DMV knowledge test is a written test. The DMV also has options for audio and person-to-person testing methods. Tests are available in most languages. Applicants will take test on the DMV computers or at home. OK to request a paper test but not guaranteed that DMV will grant special request. Contact us for additional information.
