For those who received a traffic citation and choose to attend  in-person traffic school, this program is available. Permission must be obtained by the court to participate. Most drivers are eligible to attend traffic school every 18 months. Our spacious classroom offers a pleasant environment and is located in downtown Hayward.   The course is taught by a Defensive Driving Specialist and instruction is offered in English only.  FREE coffee, tea & donuts

Traffic school procedures

  1. Select a class date
  2. Complete the  application
  3. Pay $99 fee
  4. Attend and pass the class
  5. Certificate is sent electronically to court / DMV

Classroom location

Bay Area Driving School Headquarters located at 1070 A Street Hayward, CA 94541.  Free parking in the Municipal Parking lot on the corner of Maple Court & A Street.  Look for the building with a large mural, close to Foothill Blvd.  We are located approximately 2 blocks from Hayward, B-Street B.A.R.T.

Registration

Our classes often sell out – we recommend registering early to reserve your spot. You can register online, by phone, or in person. We accept both credit cards and cash. Walk-ins are welcome on a space-available basis.

 

What to bring to class

  • Driver’s license or photo ID, required
  • Court papers including case or docket number
  • Reading glasses, if necessary
  • Minors- if under 18 years old, see special for below

Refund policy

Please note: We have a no-refunds policy for traffic school; however, one free transfer is permitted if you provide us with a 24 hours’ notice. Additional transfers will incur a $25 fee.

Minors – for those under 18 years old

Drivers under 18 years old are welcome to enroll; however, must have parent’s permission to attend.  Please bring this special form to class or email it to us in advance, info@BayAreaDriving.com

How to request an extension

To request an extension, contact the court that issued the citation.  Alameda County, click here to request an extension online. Other counties, go to their website, call or go in person to request the extension.  Most courts allow one extension.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to take a test? –  Yes, at the conclusion of the class there is an open-book test with 25 questions.  It’s multiple choice and passing is 70% or better.
  • What if I don’t pass the test? –  Don’t worry, a retest is allowed if you don’t pass on the first attempt.  Schedule a retest on a different day, within 7 days of the class.
  • Is there a lunch break? –  Yes, there is a 45 minute lunch break
  • Can I bring food? –   Yes, OK to bring food and drink to class
  • What is the class like? –   Review of new and current laws, small group discussions, videos, defensive driving, accident-avoidance techniques, donut break, etc.
  • Will I receive any documentation after the class? –  Yes, receive a completion receipt after you successfully complete the course.
  • Do I need to take the certificate to the court? –  No, certificates are sent electronically to the court / DMV.
  • How do I know if the court receives my certificate? – If you want to confirm the court processed your certificate, call the court 5-7 business days after you pass the class.

Additional Information about the court

Once you pass the test, your certificate will be electronically submitted to the court—no further action is required on your part. Please note: Neither the court nor the DMV will send a confirmation that your certificate was received or processed. If you’d like to verify receipt, you may contact the court directly or go online.  If you would like written confirmation that the court received your certificate, you’ll have the option to pay an additional fee to receive a “Proof of Submission.”

Proof of Submission

This optional service provides a notice from the driving school confirming that the court has received your traffic school certificate. You will receive this notice approximately 3-4 weeks after course completion. Fee $9.99.

Additional info

  • Late arrivals are not allowed to attend class – per DMV regulations.
  • The class is conducted in English only.
  • If your citation is from another state, contact the court for permission before enrolling and request an out-of-state certificate of completion upon enrollment.

Commercial drivers / urgent

  • After successfully completing traffic school, commercial drivers must also inform the DMV Driver Safety unit that they are a commercial driver who just completed traffic school DMV to address the point reduction.    More details here.
